spring 2013 wedding makeup trends

With spring wedding season upon us it’s time to explore the makeup trends that will be walking down the aisle.  Every bride is different and needs to feel comfortable in her own skin and these suggestions can give her a starting point to customizing her beautiful wedding day look.

Like designers, the makeup world pays close attention to the Pantone color forecast for each season when developing their new shades, and those trends are reflected on the runway.  Pantone has named emerald as this seasons “it” color, as well as other bright candy like shades like nectarine (a coral-orange), poppy red (a soft raspberry red) and African violet (a soft cool violet) to name a few.  These colors can be used on eyes or lips to give any bride a fresh and modern look.

The trend in skin is the “no makeup makeup look”; it’s about bringing out the best features while playing down the flaws.  It’s not heavy or full in coverage; the skin still has texture and doesn’t look plastic, but instead perfected.  To achieve this look try the Makeup Forever HD complexion kit ($79 at Sephora), this kit comes with everything needed for a longwearing flawless finish, it has the HD primer which will lessen the look of pores and smooth the skin, HD foundation which is a liquid foundation that looks like second skin giving a beautiful but natural finish, HD loose setting powder, its colorless and helps to prevent oil while setting and finishing the makeup creating the look of blurred or “photo shopped” skin and the kit also comes with a great high quality kabuki brush, retail value of all of this is $114 so purchasing the kit is a steal and it’s something that can always be used.

For eyes this season you will see single colors, or monotone shadow choices that are well blended and soft.  Pinks, purples, greens and blues are all being used but the colors aren’t as saturated; it’s like a pastel version of these vibrant hues, only “not your grandma’s pastels”, these tones still have some pop to them.  A great buy for any bride is the new “Glenda palette” from the “oz the great and powerful” collection by Urban Decay (Sephora or www.Urbandecay.com). This palette contains 8 eye shadow shades that include pink, purple, peach and metallic as well as an eggplant eyeliner and raspberry pink lip gloss pen all for $49.  Another great item for the eyes this season is the new Prolongwear Paint Pots by MAC, these are cream eye shadows that can be applied by brush or finger, they can be worn alone to create that soft wash of color or they can be used under eye shadow as a base to help colors pop and stay longer.  They are water proof and crease proof (always a plus), the top color choices in these for bridal are “lets skate” (soft pearl pink), “vintage selection” soft pearl taupe and “antique diamond” (soft pearl dusky green).  Each Prolongwear Paint Pot retails for $18.50 and can purchased at any MAC retail store or online at www.maccosmetics.com.

In 2013 the term “blushing bride” is brought to a new level.  Back to the aforementioned skin trend, along with looking fresh it also appears naturally flushed and lit from within.  So no harsh visible blush, but more of a blended soft flushness to the cheeks, not dewy but glowey. Top pick for blush this season is Smashbox’s Halo Longwear Blush, the formula gives all day wear while also staying luminous and fresh looking.  It comes in 4 wearable shades for all skin tones: pink, nude, berry and coral.  This can be found at Sephora or www.smashbox.com for $24.

Finishing off the look is lips and the trends are brighter bolder colors but done as a stain so that the colors are more toned down.  Keep in mind that if the lips are the focal point then eyes should be done in softer tones.  A great find for lips for the bride is MAC’s Prolongwear lip pencils.  These retail for $19.50 and can be worn all over the lip to create a perfect long-lasting stained effect or can be layered with a lipstick or gloss in a coordinating tone.  Must have shades include “in anticipation” (coral-pink), “kiss me quick” (soft cherry red), “more to love” (raspberry) and “absolutely it” (plum).  It has a creamy texture but gives a comfortable 8 hour wear.

When It comes to wedding makeup keep in mind that you don’t have to be “matchy matchy” with your flowers, bridesmaids dresses or menu cards, but you do want to coordinate. Keep your look classy and true to you and you can’t go wrong.

Golden Globes 2013 Makeup Trends

Here at Artistry By Erin, I like to stay on top of the trends in makeup, that means keeping an eye on what Hollywood brings to the red carpet.  I have picked a few fave looks and I will share them with you as well as how to achieve those looks.

1. beautifully bold Nicole Ritchie did a very colorfully look but kept it classy and balanced.  When wearing a shimmery eye shadow like this bright  silver-blue, you want to first keep the color on the lid only (bring that bold of a shade to high up can make you look clownish) and also pair that texture with matte finishes to create balance.  to much shimmer and you risk looking like a disco ball.  The other winning part of this look is that not only did she keep everything else matte but she kept it in neutral tones as well. For her skin she didnt do much highlighting but instead used a matte full coverage foundation and she bronzed the perimeter of her face and did some well blended contouring on her nose and cheeks. I also love the thick vintage black winged eyeliner.

for this look try: Urban Decay’s “shattered” eye shadow pressed on to the lid with a flat brush, with a crease brush blend MAC’s “saddle” eye shadow into the crease to soften the blue.  do a winged eyeliner keeping it thick to the outside of the eye and only doing a small flick at the edge, try MAC’s “penultimate”. add a navy blue pencil liner to the bottom lid like Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on pencil in “binge” and in the waterline try Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on pencil in “yeyo”.  keep the skin matte with a full coverage foundation like Makeup Forever’s Pro Finish Powder Foundation and a trick to a great contour is to use the same foundation (to maintain that matte finish) but about 2 shades darker, and blend well, its not drag! finish with a pale pinkish nude lip like MAC’s “pure zen”.

2. soft and smokey  Oh Jen, such a classic look! JLo looks beautiful as usual and has soft age appropriate makeup. opposit of Nicole, she chose to highlight the skin, giving her that inner glow look instead of being matte. The highlight is applied to the center of her face and the high planes with very minimal contouring, this softens the face making it look diffused and keeps angles from looking harsh this is a good technique for women in the 40s and up, be weary of to strong of a contour, it can age you.  Her eyes are smokey but done in a taupey-purpleish hue with a pearlized highlight in the tear duct.  Black eyeliner is kept thin and rims the eye while shadow encompasses the eyes in a soft shaded effect. Blush is neutral and lips are left nude and glossy. This is truely a wearable and classic look.

for this look try: start with an illuminating primer like MAC’s Prep & Prime Natural Radiance follow with a weightless, hydrating like Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Liquid Makeup then with a fan brush lightly sweep a highlight like Makeup Forever’s Compact Shine On on the cheek bones, nose, chin, cupids bow (above the lip) and center of the forehead close to the brow. blend a natural peachy golden blush like MAC’s “springsheen”  on the apples of the cheeks.  to get the eyes right use a fluffy brush and apply products in a circular and windshield wiper motion, start with a shade like MAC’s “satin taupe”  wrap that color under the eye as well keeping it diffused.  add a pearlized highlight in the tearduct and also just under the brow’s arch by tapping on  MAC’s cream colour base in “pearl”. line the top lid and the inner bottom lid (stopping midway) with Urban Decay’s 24/7 liquid liner in “perversion”.  complete the look with a nude pearly gloss like MAC’s sheen supreme lipglass in “almond blossom“.

3. hollywood bombshell Francesca Eastwood pulled off a simply gorgeous  old hollywood glam look. This too is a classic look, keeping the eyes nuetral with rich black eyeliner, porcelain skin and a bright well executed matte red lip.  For many women reds can be scary, but you just have to find the red that works for you.  blondes with fair skin look great in the brighter blue reds like this here you see it almost has a bright pink hue to it.  Olive skin ladies with dark hair look good in the berry reds and even redheads with freckles can pull off a red lip if it is a orangey or mahogany red.  For this look the skin is kept young creamy and fresh.  The earthy brown tones on the eyes have a slight shimmer while jet black liner and false lashes add definition.  This timeless look can be worn by any woman at any age.

for this look try: start with a creamy foundation like Urban Decay’s Surreal Skin Cream to Powder Foundation and set with a loose powder like Makeup Forever’s HD powder. pack MAC’s “mulch” eye shadow on the lid and also smudged under the eye, line with MAC’s fluidline in “blacktrack” and add false lashes. for perfected red lips  first line and fill them in with MAC’s “cherry” liner and then with a brush apply MAC’s “russian red” lipstick.

 

4. glitter and glow  Halle Berry pulled off a subtle natural glowy look with just a the right touch of glitter.  When working with glitter products you want to be careful to not over do it, this look is a win because she kept the skin matte yet bronzed, did a nude satin finish lip, very subtle brown eye liner and just concentrated the glitter in the inner corner of her eyes.  it really is a simple and understated look, but still very pretty and easy to wear.

for this look try: a matte finish medium coverage foundation like Smashbox’s Studio Skin  bronze the cheeks and forehead with a matte bronzer like Smashbox’s Bronze Lights and use a sheer finish warm blush like MAC’s “peaches”.  for the eyes with a flat brush stipple a glittery  eyeshadow like MAC’s pressed pigment in “angelic” in the inner corner and blend that into shimmery dark brown color like MAC’s “twinks” then line with a pencil liner like MAC’s Prolongwear eyeliner in “rich experience”.  keep lips nude with a slight sheen with a lustre finish lipstick like MAC’s “hightea”.

 

So those are some of my favorite looks, some other ladies that had stunning makeup were: Anne Hathaway looking very Aubrey Hepburn, Jessica Alba with her tangerine lips and  Julianne Hough made her eyes the focal point with smoldery browns.

well hello 2013…
